American Cursive Handwriting Sull Pdf Download
Product Description:
Subtitled: Self study workbook and curriculum. Loose-leaf. 349 pgs.
It happened just the other day. Someone called Rainbow wanting a self-instructing cursive handwriting program that was more elegant than the streamlined program they were using. This is it! Combining historical perspective with motivational challenge, this is a complete curriculum providing instruction and lots of practice. It claims to be the most thorough single-volume instructional source on cursive handwriting currently available, and I'm not going to dispute that claim. Michael Sull is America's premier penman (yes, it's a term) who provides calligraphy for Hallmark Cards. He loves handwriting, and he'll convince you to love it as well - and probably to start practicing again. This single volume includes historical information about the development of penmanship, specific technique information (posture, hand position, paper movement, etc.), lesson plans for letter formation and for moving from primary scale to handwriting scale (i.e. size of letters), and lots and lots of practice sheets as well as a collection of various quotations and excerpts from literature and poetry to be used for practice. A number of appendices provide blank masters for continuing practice, information on using and purchasing a fountain pen, a certificate of completion and a glossary of terms. If you want to categorize the type of handwriting taught, it is essentially Palmerian - which is an adaptation of Spencerian and a forerunner to what we know as "traditional." This volume can be used in a variety of ways. It is a self-instructional manual for an older (5th grade and up) student who wants to perfect and polish their handwriting. However, it also provides the necessary instructional and technique information needed to start younger children.
These materials span grades and include both instruction and practice.

Should I buy one book per student or are the pages meant to be copied?
A shopper on Jul 21, 2020
BEST ANSWER: We copied our pages because we wanted to be able to practice the same pages more than once, like the "Movement Exercise Practice Sheet" and the "Cross-Drill Exercise Practice Sheet." It does give 2 blank copies of each of those at the back, so if you were only thinking to do any given sheet 3 times or less, you could just write in the book.

From what I remember, (I don't have the book with me) the author's narrative implies that each student would have their own book and make practice copies from their individual book. But I don't know for sure if he prohibited making copies for a class to use.

BEST ANSWER: I would think faster than a year. There are many, many exercises. I would think you might shorten some of them to do it faster.

I think that it's more self paced. I don't see anything that stipulates it be done on a certain schedule.

If you put in the daily 30 to 60 minutes, you can be done in about 6 months.

BEST ANSWER: It's "American cursive". The script on the cover is representative of the script inside. If you search "American cursive" and "Michael Sull", you can see more examples.

The description mentions a "Primary Grade Supplement". Is this available for purchase separately or is it included with the "American Cursive Handwriting" book? Thanks!
A shopper on Jun 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The primary grade supplement is meant for use by those below 5th grade. It does not come with the book. What we found is that this book assumes the user already knows how to make the letter shapes but needs to work on accuracy and form. If the user doesn't know the cursive letter shapes you'll need some extra material - we were in this situation and supplemented with a different method intended for second graders, which was not the same font exactly, but close enough for our purposes.

What Pen points did you use with this curriculum?
A shopper on Mar 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: We just used sharpened standard #2 pencils, as my daughter is just learning this script and it can be very frustrating using pen when wanting to correct the shape of a letter. Pens can be used later on once the lettering is better mastered.

This book has a section on fountain pens, but it is designed to be used with regular ball-point pins and pencils. I went through it with a fountain pen and a mechanical pencil, so use whatever you are comfortable with.

Does this have practice pages for students?
A shopper on Sep 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, there are practice pages within each chapter (these have specific text on them), AND there are blank pages in the Appendix. These blank pages have the 2 different size writing lines for regular & then smaller script writing. These blank pages also have the slant lines on them, to help the child with the slant of the script writing.

Yes, a large portion of the book is just that actually. Just to give you a heads up: because of this the book is entirely loose leaf so you will need a binder to keep it all together.

worked when everything else had failed
My son was not ready for cursive in 3rd grade when the schools taught it, and over time even his manuscript was getting more and more illegible due to less and less handwritten work as the schools shifted everything onto computer. I had tried teaching him with other cursive methods intended for elementary kids, but nothing worked until we finally buckled down with this course. The key for us was the beginning warmup sheet, which is a page of circles, lines, and spirals. My son, by now in 7th grade, did this page and only this page every day for a couple of weeks (the virus lockdown finally gave us the opportunity to be totally consistent with the program). This warmup exercise built his fine motor strength and made him ready to learn cursive, while simultaneously dramatically improving his manuscript and his numbers. It even helped him in math since he used to miss problems due to not being able to read his own writing. This course assumes that you are already familiar with how to make the shapes of the letters, and since my son had forgotten, we supplemented with one of the failed elementary courses just for getting letter formation. Eventually we were able to shift entirely to this course, and my son is continuing to work one page each day to polish and refine his handwriting. He was so proud when he had learned the final letter that he started writing cursive in every possible place, even on his math work. If your child has missed the cursive boat due to poor fine motor skills, try this method and really stick with that first warmup page; it will seem as if you are getting nowhere at first but progress is happening and you will be richly rewarded when your child no longer feels ashamed for not knowing cursive.

Thorough and wonderfully presented
My 9yo son wanted to relearn cursive and improve his handwriting, so after watching some videos on YouTube of Michael Sull writing and commenting on writing we decided on this program. He is very happy with it and does one lesson each day, which does not seem to be burdensome. He is using the standard book and can already see an improvement in his writing by following the instructions on letter formation, placement and size. We are a month in and I anticipate he will finish this program with as much enthusiasm as he is starting.

Amazing Penmanship Transformation!
I used this with my two older children, who were 13 and 12 at the time. They both could write neatly when they were very intentional about it, but most of their "everyday" writing was quite sloppy. Both were initially resistant to the idea of "Handwriting Bootcamp," as I called it. Once my 13-year-old son read the introductory information about muscle memory, he said, "That makes sense," and worked on the assignments with a great attitude. He laughs now that his friends can always recognize anything written because it is in such neat, legible cursive! (No anonymous youth group surveys for this kid anymore!) My 12-year-old daughter had a pretty negative attitude for the first half of the program, until she started getting compliments from others on her neat cursive. Then, she finished it up with a good attitude, because it felt good to be noticed for neat writing, instead of messy. So, I found that this worked well with both an enthusiastic and an unenthusiastic child. My 10-year-old daughter is working on the program now, and initial results are encouraging!

Really enjoying this as an adult
I ordered this, because I am an older person who got worried about cognitive ability as I age. I also had horrible handwriting that I tended to blame on my brilliant mind (yeah right:).
This has some of the simplest--yet best--handwriting advice I ever came across. I had good teachers in grade school--but this information was not taught to me.
In any case--I have enjoyed and continue to enjoy this self-study course. I highly recommend it to any adult who wants to re-acquaint themselves with cursive handwriting.
